The Spark is the real player
In GRAIN ROT your character has two parts: the Living Spark (your actual soul) and the Wooden Vessel (your disposable body). The Vessel is what swings tools, carries inventory, kicks enemies, and interacts with the world. The Spark is what persists between bodies.
What happens when the Vessel breaks
When your Vessel’s health reaches zero it shatters, collapses or burns. The Spark is ejected as a glowing floating orb. Your physical inventory is left at the break site, where teammates can recover it.
Once ejected, your Spark has three powers that a living Vessel does not:
- Intangibility — you can scout dangerous corridors without physical collision.
- Hijack — you can possess a fresh Vessel to continue the run.
- Support — you can guide teammates and trigger abilities while hovering.
Spark energy is limited
Your Spark stays powered only while nearby powered Vessels exist. If you wander too far from the team, you fade. Stay close, stay useful, and prepare to hijack a new body before your old vessel is gone.
Why this changes tactics
Because death is rarely final for an individual, GRAIN ROT rewards forward planning. Strong players deliberately break their own Vessel at opportune moments to dropkick allies, scout ahead, or bait the Corrupted. The Vessel is a tool — not a life bar.
