Your first descent is not a race
GRAIN ROT punishes early greed. The first descent into the ruins looks chaotic, but the smartest beginners slow down. Stop at the elevator, listen, then move. The audio design carries most of the danger signals.
Before you ride the elevator
- Keep the mallet in your loadout. It is the only early-game tool that breaks furniture quickly and disassembles industrial heaters for high scrap.
- Place one spare mallet on the elevator floor before departure. The game silently drops overflow items, so do not over-stack.
- Confirm everyone in the party has at least 8 GB of inventory. Beginners who run out of slots mid-room are the most common cause of failed extractions.
During the run
Listen before entering each room. Footsteps, distant growls, and metallic scrapes give more information than visual cues in the dark. Commit fully to destroying high-value objects — industrial heaters explode if you hesitate, taking your Vessel with them.
When your Vessel breaks
You do not die. Your Spark escapes and can keep scouting, support teammates, or hijack a fresh Vessel. Do not rage-respawn. Float, look around, plan your next move.
After the run
Feed every haul into the Grinder at the Outpost, then spend gold on inventory expansion and stamina upgrades. Both pay off across every future run.
Common first-day mistakes
- Carrying too many duplicate tools.
- Ignoring audio cues.
- Pushing into deeper layers before the Outpost is upgraded.
